Top Ten Irritating Phrases
Tuesday, 11. November 2008 - 7:02 am
The Oxford University has done the English language a commendable service by compiling a list of top ten irritating phrases in routine usage. Commendable because it was time somebody publicized this daily rape of the language. It is a great vent for the mass of men who genuinely respect correct usage, and show deep concern for avoiding linguistic sloth.
Here goes.
1 – At the end of the day
2 – Fairly unique
3 – I personally
4 – At this moment in time
5 – With all due respect
6 – Absolutely
7 – It’s a nightmare
8 – Shouldn’t of
9 – 24/7
10 – It’s not rocket science
My pet hates include:
1. Be on the same page
2. Anyways (damn, it is anyway)
3. Going forward
4. At the end of the day, the bottomline is…
5. To reiterate again
What’s yours?

I’m with you on “anyways”. Can’t stand it and can’t correct them either. I’d add “reply back” to Vibha’s list too.

By the way these are not irritating questions, they are phrases. Usage – different ways people use them. They can be used in a question, statement, comment, report etc etc
